SANDTA ADVANCED COURSE- JOHANNESBURG AND CAPE TOWN- OCT 2018

Heather Holgate will be presenting a one day workshop on What People with Hemiplegia Can Teach Us. The workshop will run in Johannesburg and Cape Town in October 2018. This is an exciting opportunity to look at enabling participation through lifestyle activities while securing caregiver involvement. Workshops will explore current trends in Bobath, Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) and Hand-Arm Bimanual Intensive Therapy (HABIT), while also taking a closer look at the accompanying difficulties associated with hemiplegia. This is a rare chance to work closely with a Senior International Tutor in a small, intimate workshop setting.

Heather presents from a wealth of experience of working with children affected by cerebral palsy as well as teaching internationally. She graduated as an Occupational Therapist from University of Cape Town and has worked in paediatrics in various settings ranging from Agape School in Mitchell’s Plain, two Bobath Centres, private practice as well as NHS trusts. She is currently the operational lead for Children’s Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy in North London. Heather is a Senior Bobath Tutor and has presented a range of advanced courses, specialist workshops, introductory Bobath courses, and the OT component of the Basic Bobath paediatric course (8 weeks) in South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, Japan, UK, Norway, Belgium, Finland and Poland.

Heather imparts complex knowledge in an informal and relaxed way to stimulate audience participation and learning. She is able to get to the heart of work-related questions while challenging therapists to think in new ways about how they approach their case loads. During her treatment demonstrations it is inspirational to watch her handling and achieving results while the child thinks they are having a magnificent play session; newspapers become spaceships or vuvuzelas or dinosaurs... whatever may be needed to create a magical play experience to meet each child or young persons’ unique needs. Heather makes each child’s potential shine and teaches us how we can do the same during out treatment sessions.
