Overview

Who is SANDTA

SANDTA is a group of therapists with a special interest in Neurodevelopmental Therapy

It was established in 1976 as a way to support and equip therapists working with people living with neuromotor conditions. Now a registered non-profit organisation, SANDTA has six interactive branches around the country.

What is Neurodevelopmental Therapy (NDT)?

Neurodevelopmental therapy is based on the lifelong work of Karl and Bertha Bobath. The Bobath concept offers an interdisciplinary, problem-solving approach to the assessment, treatment and management of any individual with a limited ability to participate in daily life due to an impairment of motor, sensory, perceptual and cognitive function resulting from a central nervous system disorder.
The Bobath concept continues to evolve based on the evidence emerging through new theories, models, research and information in the movement science. The individual’s abilities and impairments are identified and addressed in relation to participation in functional activities. The Bobath/NDT concept offers a hands-on, problem-solving approach with interventions involving handling and guidance of movement to optimise function.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Who can train in Neurodevelopmental Therapy?

Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Speech Therapists who have completed their undergraduate training can apply.  It is beneficial if the therapist has some experience in working with individuals with neurological conditions and is in an environment where the skills learnt can be applied. There are introductory to advanced level courses which are presented in South Africa by a group of highly trained NDT Instructors. Once trained in Bobath/NDT, a therapist works in collaboration with clients, families, caregivers and other healthcare professionals to develop comprehensive individualised treatment programmes based on the concept and directed towards specific goals.

    Course profiles

How can I keep my NDT skills up to date?

A refresher course is now available online. Practical advanced level courses are presented around South Africa by Senior South African NDT Instructors as well International Tutors. In addition, there are six local SANDTA branches which operate throughout South Africa.  These branches organise regular CPD events where relevant clinical topics are covered.
